SDBC Feature of the Week: Katie Brown
Meet our #SDBC Feature of the Week!
This is Katie Brown, a violist from Evanston, IL. She recently graduated from the Eastman School of Music where she received her masters degree in Viola Performance and Music Education. Equally passionate about performance and education, Katie has performed, given lectures, and lecture recitals across the globe; most recently in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Katie is also a Teaching Artist for the El Sistema inspired program ROCmusic in Rochester, New York. Katie is a member of the illustrious organization Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc.
In November 2017, Katie co-launched her podcast “Classically Black Podcast” with her friend and fellow musician Dalanie Harris. Classically Black Podcast takes a look at classical music from the black perspective. More often than not, people of color are excluded from the classical music narrative. Classically Black Podcast however, creates a space where black people speak about classical music colloquially in a way that has never been done before. Black people are a part of classical music and are not going anywhere. Classically Black Podcast is not only for classical musicians or people of color and is available wherever you listen to podcasts!
When it comes to being single Katie says, “at this point of my life, I’m honestly focused on being the best version of myself. I’m passionate about learning myself through and through so I can offer the best of me. And this doesn’t only mean romantically. Can I be the best daughter, cousin, Soror, friend, etc.? Also, after receiving my masters in viola performance, I’m trying to be the best musician I can be. Somebody’s gotta match my fly and I’m working to make sure that fly’s the best it can be!”
